The Zeotrope was invented in 1834 by William George Horner. A zoetrope is a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid succession of static pictures. The Zeotrope was the first device that created animation movements. The zeotrope did not become popular till the 1860's
The images in zoetrope become 'alive' when you place a strip of drawings inside the zoetrope's drum, then you have to spin it and look through the slots and the images will appear in continuous movement. This will work properly if the images do not have vast changes in between each picture. Eg: a butterfly getting bigger and flying around will work well but something like a strip of different type of animals will not show properly and will be unsuccessful.
This is an image of a Zeotrope
